Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular decisions from the official, echoing the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
