Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
